The Value of Having Grit and Talent
When we see highly accomplished people in the public eye, we often think of them as having a lot of talent to be so successful. We often don’t think about the resilience or “grit” involved in reaching one’s goals. Having the resolve to overcome adverse circumstances can be as valuable as talent.
Talent is a gift. Talent can align with your interests and passions and make your journey smoother or faster, but it is not sufficient in and of itself – you still need to practice and build experience and expertise. Yet, perseverance and grit can compensate for talent at all but the virtuoso levels.
Although talent isn’t a guarantee, it can determine the extreme upper limits of success. That’s where grit and perseverance come in. Grit and a positive attitude can actually be more effective in helping you achieve your goals than talent. Grit is a choice – it is a certain way of thinking and viewing the world. Build grit by resolving to do something you’ve been putting off, or don’t want to do – try to do so and do an “unappealing” thing each day to build your capacity for grit.
Building up your capacity for grit and determination helps you to move forward and make choices. Take control of your beliefs on success and your perspective on life. When trying new things, remember that persistence is more important than talent.
Grit goes beyond mindset. It’s a skill that can be developed. Interested to learn how? Customize your coaching today.
