Finding Inner Balance in a Hyper-Connected World

In this modern world – it feels like we are always connected to our phones, emails, and social media notifications, and it can be hard to break the connection and find peace.

Here are some techniques for coexisting with technology and cultivating inner peace:

Focus on using technology with intent. Take a moment to think about how you use technology in your life.  How are you spending time online – is it for work, to connect with family and friends, or for entertainment? Do you spend time mindlessly surfing? Are there ways you use technology that doesn’t align with your intent or your values?

Remember that technology is a tool. Take a look at your relationship with technology- is being connected absorbing your life?  How can you more mindfully step back and use technology as a tool instead of making it the focus of your life?

Take a break. Nurture your inner peace and find balance by taking frequent “technology breaks,” step away from your phone, email, and social media. Consider setting aside your weekends for “in-real-life” time with family and friends, while avoiding surfing the internet and social media, sending text messages, or posting content. If you interact with people online, let them know you are taking a break so they don’t become concerned about you.

Manage your connections. You likely have connections from different phases of your life. Take a look at your connections list and think about who your most important connections are.  Do you really need to keep up with everyone? Are there connections whose posts are no longer relevant to your life or whose “drama” saps your time and energy? Would your inner peace benefit from disconnecting from them?

Manage your social media time. Consider setting specific times for checking your social media accounts each day. And consider setting a timer to limit the amount of time you spend surfing or checking for posts from your connections.

Try some stress-reducing activities. Living in a hyper-connected world where you feel the need to be constantly available can be stressful and can make you feel on edge. Try scheduling some alone time each day where you can do yoga, meditate, journal, or spend time with your favorite creative activity or hobby. Or simply take a walk around the block, and dance to your favorite music. Disconnect from the world for a few minutes each day.

Making these strategies your daily habits can help counterbalance the stress of our hyper-connected world. If you would like to further explore ways to create inner balance and mindfulness in your life, check out our coaching membership or self-paced wellbeing programs.
